"best opportunities" to develop the offshore wind industry.

North East wind industry potential hailed by minister


15 November 2010 - THE North East has been hailed by a Government minister as providing some of the "best opportunities" to develop the offshore wind industry.

Energy Minister Charles Hendry told MPs that there was “great potential” for the region’s green industries and held out tens of millions of pounds worth of Government support to develop them.

His comments came after Labour MP Alex Cunningham, who represents Stockton North, asked about funding for local carbon technologies in the House of Commons.

Mr Hendry said: “The spending review announcement included about £200m to support the development of energy technologies, as well as up to £1bn for carbon capture and storage.

“We will commit up to £60m to support offshore wind manufacturing infrastructure at port sites, to meet the needs of offshore wind manufacturers.”
