Solar Energy Project in Western U.S. Approved
12/03/2012 - A new plan to transform 285,000 acres of vacant land in the western United States into solar energy farms was approved by the federal government this week. The land, covering 445 square miles in parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, could produce as much as 23,700 megawatts of renewable energy on government land, enough energy to provide solar power to 7 million homes. More than fifty percent of the land (153,627 acres) is in Southern California.
Ken Salazar, secretary of the interior, finalized the plan (referred to as the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement [PEIS]) at an event in Las Vegas, Nev., with United States Senator Harry Reid (D-NV). The new plan capitalizes on the abundance of sunshine and potential for solar power in this sunny region of the country. Promotion and growth of the solar energy industry is critical in moving the United States towards energy independence and reducing reliance on both foreign and domestic oil. read more>>>
