3 September 2012 - Over the past thirty years, China has had three golden decades and experienced rapid economic development following Deng Xiaoping’s reform process and policy of opening up. Since 1978, it has routinely achieved 10% annual growth rates each year, which have turned a poor country into the world’s second biggest economy. However, this economic miracle has inevitably brought certain problems such as resource scarcity, huge import dependency and environmental challenges. Therefore, today, Beijing is striving to find new alternative formulas in order to sustain economic development. In this regard, in recent years, it has designed a new growth path and set ambitious goals to achieve energy transformation by shifting to clean energy throughout the country.
Considering the reality that promotion of green technologies has become a recent trend among countries, Beijing, the world’s biggest energy consumer, also followed this trend and has begun to pay considerable attention to increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy profile. In this regard, while China aims to overcome negative consequences of rapid growth, on the other hand, it also tries to complement the economic miracle with green development. In other words, Beijing sees the promotion of local clean energy resources as the best solution to sustain economic development in the coming decades.
