23 April 2012 - Mozambique's Environment Minister, Alcinda Abreu, announced in Maputo on Monday that the country is currently drawing up its "road map for the green economy" and its national report for the forthcoming Earth Summit, to be held in June in Rio de Janeiro.
The summit is commonly referred to as "Rio + 20", since it is being held on the twentieth anniversary of the first World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in the Brazilian city in 1992.
Speaking at the opening of a Sub-Regional Conference on the Green Economy in Mozambique, Abreu said the road map is being drawn up with specific attention to agriculture, energy and cities.
The meeting, supported by the World Wife Fund for Nature (WWF), includes a seminar on Strategic Environmental Assessment, an initiative which is part of the preparation for Rio + 20.
"The choice of agriculture arises because this is the sector that stimulates national development", said Abreu. "Energy because the country has a potential in renewable sources of energy which, if exploited, can contribute to foreign exchange earnings, and cities because, although the majority of the population lives in the countryside, the trend is for migration to the urban areas". read more>>>
