A deal in Durban could mean jobs in Britain, argues Andy Atkins, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth

06 Dec 2011 - Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has his work cut out. The second week of UN climate negotiations in South Africa is underway and, as widely predicted, industrialised countries are ducking their responsibilities and the Obama administration isn't budging.

Yet just yards away from the conference centre in Durban, and the air-conditioned hotel rooms where the major players sleep, thousands of ordinary people took to the streets this weekend. Africans are already feeling the devastating impacts of a rapidly warming planet on their lives and livelihoods. For them, failure isn't an option.

I wonder if Mr Huhne heard their protests or read the messages on the banners they're waving, pleading rich countries not to kill the Kyoto Protocol. Huhne played a crucial role at the Cancun talks last year, keeping the Protocol alive. Twelve months on, the world is a little warmer. The eyes of Africa are upon him once again. read more>>>
