Tim DeChristopher
Tim will serve two years in federal prison for his courageous act of civil disobedience, yet the CEOs of Massey Energy (responsible for 29 deaths at Big Branch Mine) and BP (responsible for the devastation of the entire Gulf Coast) remain free. Tim goes to jail, while the Wall Street crooks who broke our economy and the Big Oil and Coal tycoons who poison our planet continue to play games with our future.
Reminding Us to Act Like Our Lives Depend on It
July 27 2011 - Standing alone outside an empty concrete courthouse in our nation’s capital I was adrift in the isolation and somber news that climate hero, Tim DeChristopher, would spend 2 years in prison for his bravery. Through the silence I was reminded of the last time I saw Tim, speaking 3 months ago at Power Shift 2011.
I stood anxiously off stage left waiting for my turn to speak as he pounded the podium and delivered an honest, fiery call to action. I could feel the roar of the 10,000 person crowd erupt as Tim called for our movement to summon unprecedented bravery and “do what is necessary, not what is convenient.”
That powerful moment seemed so distant as the cold reality of his sentence was announced to the crowd of us at the DC solidarity action. As the protesters dispersed I couldn’t help but think: “We need to do more.”
Two years too much as the real criminals walk free. Wall Street crooks that broke our economy, the Big Oil and Coal tycoons that are cashing in on their bids while our future hangs in the balance. read more>>>
