May 14, 2011 - China's UN ambassador Li Baodong said on Friday that path of developing green economy chosen by each country based on their specific national conditions should be respected.
Li's remarks came as he addressed the Ministerial Dialogue on Moving Towards Sustainable Development Expectations for Rio+20 as a part of the 19th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD).
Li said green economy is an important instrument for achieving sustainable development. "Countries differ in resource endowment and development levels. It is imperative to respect the path of developing green economy chosen by each country's government based on their specific national conditions. There should not be unified standard or set of indicators." "The international community should take into full account of the price paid by the developing countries in their transition of green economy as well as the challenges and risks they have to face," Li said. "Referential treatment should be provided to developing countries in terms of marketing access, investment and subsidies, intellectual property rights."
Green economy should be used as an excuse to attach new conditions to trade, investment and development assistance, Li noted. {continued}
