Greenest U.S. States?

Some may surprise

Apr 14, 2011 - In politics, there are red states and blue states. But when it comes to the environment, there are deep green, semi-green and, well, brown states. Which hue is yours?

An annual ranking of states, based on 10 criteria, finds that eight of the top 10 are on the West and East coasts. Vermont tops the list, followed by New York, Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, California, Nevada, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine.

"The citizens of Vermont were amongst the most resource efficient in the nation," said Gay Browne, founder of Greenopia, an online directory of green products and services that compiled the rankings. "Sustainability on such an individual level no doubt creates a virtuous circle that leads to an overall greener community."
