Gross area: 10,000 ft2

Date completed: February 2010

Profile: Located on the 11th floor of a former industrial printing house, the public radio program Democracy Now! is the first broadcast facility to achieve LEED Platinum certification. An acoustically insulated and temperature controlled core television studio is surrounded by editing studios, a control room, a machine room, archives, and other supporting spaces with full daylight views. Re-use was a key theme of the project. The original, exterior single-pane factory windows were moved inside and repurposed as walls for the offices, contributing to the transparency of the space. The design team cleaned and polished the concrete floor with a zero-VOC epoxy and stripped layers of paint and plaster from the walls to reveal the original red brick walls. The radiators were also cleaned, stripped, and restored. {continued}
