January 27, 2011 - A Davidson County solar farm has been switched on and is expected to produce enough energy to power more than 2,600 homes a year.
Duke Energy Corp. and SunEdison LLC formed a joint venture in August 2009 for the solar farm in Linwood.
The companies said Wednesday that the 17.2-megawatt facility — covering more than 200 acres — was completed in late December. SunEdison is the largest solar-energy company in North America.
The solar farm contains more than 63,000 photovoltaic solar panels and is expected to generate an estimated 28 million kilowatt-hours a year. Some of the energy produced by the farm is lost during the transfer process. {continued}
