Nuclear stuck in neutral; solar soars


January 9, 2011 - A field of solar panels, the rumble of concrete trucks and the restarting of nuclear fission are among this year's top goals for the three big electric utilities that serve Central Florida.

Orlando Utilities Commission is nailing down final details for a 6-megawatt solar-energy plant at its Curtis Stanton Energy Center east of Orlando, where generators fueled by coal and natural gas are in operation.

The groundbreaking ceremony is set for February and the plant to start up by the end of the year.

Thousands of the photovoltaic panels will be installed and operated by Regenesis Power, with financing to come from a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corp. OUC will buy the plant's electricity at a set rate. {continued}
