Debating the Green Economy

While there should be debates on how we as a planet, let alone individual economies, go about attaining a green economy and bringing about a cleaner living, there really shouldn't be any on the why. It should be obvious that this, long over due and talked about, is the natural progression as to us supposedly intelligent beings of this planet. The U.S. used to be, now seems like long ago, a natural leader in advancing forward through investment and the innovations, now we are fast lagging behind as others take the lead.

World to continue debate on green economy in 2011


January 25, 2011 - The green economy is emerging as a significant concept, though also a controversial one, that will be part of the international environmental debate this year.

At the United Nations in New York earlier this month, I took part in a panel discussion on this topic, together with the head of the U.N. Environment Programme, Aachim Steiner, and others.

The green economy has become a major theme of the Rio Plus 20 conference to be held next year in Brazil to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the historic U.N. conference on the environment and development, better known as the Rio Summit, held in 1992.

At first glance, the green economy appears to be a simple idea whose time has come. Surely we all want to conserve natural resources and minimize pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. What better way than to turn the economy green? {continued}
