Green Deal Policy on Energy Efficiency

Green Deal to be published in Parliament today

09 December 2010 - The Energy Bill, which contains the Government's flagship Green Deal policy on energy efficiency, will be introduced in Parliament today. Legislation in the Energy Security and Green Economy Bill, which will be published in Parliament today, sets out how the Green Deal will help households and businesses make their buildings more energy efficient, while creating jobs for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the construction sector.

The Green Deal is expected to go into effect in 2012 and the Energy Bill will set the framework for the policy if it is passed. Secondary legislation will still be required, however, to set out all the details of the scheme, specifically how people will qualify.

The second reading of the bill will be on December 22 and Grand Committee hearings will start the week of January 10 2010.

"When it comes to making our homes warmer and cosier, Britain's a laggard," said Chris Huhne, Energy and Climate Change Secretary. {continued}
