December 2010 - To the casual visitor, Final(ly) House plays hide-and-seek. Nestled within a saddleback of untamed Wolfback Ridge in Sausalito, California, the 2,150-square-foot house includes a green roof planted with a carefully researched collection of flora native to its microclimate, which perfectly disguises the building from approaching drivers. The camouflage is equally perfect for the client, a nonagenarian couple who advocated for the creation of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area next door.
The client’s participation in that park campaign dates to the 1960s, about the same time this husband and wife purchased the 14,000-square-foot parcel. Amazingly, they left the site untouched until they tapped San Francisco–based Rothschild Schwartz Architects to design the residence… {continued}
