Canadian Smart Grid Technologies

Canadians more engaged with smart grid
October 24, 2012 - Canadian consumers want to be engaged with smart grids but want and need to know more about the value these technologies can deliver, according to research from SmartGrid Canada and the Independent Electricity System Operator.

While 69 percent of Canadians look favorably on the smart grid, only 27 percent said they had a basic knowledge of its components. Similarly, 68 percent see smart homes as positive while a slightly higher number, 40 percent, say they have some understanding of the concept. Despite the lower numbers associated with smart grid knowledge, Canadian awareness levels of smart meters are higher than those in the U.S., according to the research -- largely a result of large-scale smart meter deployments in Ontario and BC.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, 37 percent of Canadians believe smart grids mean a loss of customer control over energy usage and 28 percent believe the smart grid will result in higher costs in the long run. However, 71 percent believe smart grids will actually save them money. read more>>>
