Green building rush to boost trade, jobs in Asia
10 October 2012 - As the demand for energy, water and eco-friendly materials for construction grows enormously over the years, experts said Asia, including the Philippines, stands to benefit from the global trend by creating green buildings and generating new jobs.

“Going green is certainly in hot demand. Global demand for green products and services has shot up over the years, and is on a fast-growth trajectory,” Tai Lee Siang, president of the Singapore Green Building Council said during the opening ceremony of the three-day International Green Building Conference (IGBC) and the Build Eco Xpo (BEX) Asia 2012. “The green economy is also a big job creator in transforming Asia’s environment toward a sustainable future,” he added.

Citing data from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Lee said the global environmental market could be worth at least $607 billion and could potentially rise to $836 billion by 2015. Compared to the global annual growth rate of 3 percent between 1996 and 2001, environmental markets in developing countries grew at 7 percent to 8 percent over the same period.

“Notably, it is in the developing countries that the environmental market is undergoing an explosion. Growth in the Asia and Pacific region is expected to triple by 2015, making it the fastest-growing region for environmental goods and services in the world. read more>>>
