Wind turbine project: Up to $381K+ a year savings expected

Wind turbine project expected to save HCC $381K a year

July 19, 2011 - A wind turbine project is expected to save Heartland Community College more than $381,000 per year in energy costs after installation this fall, college officials said Tuesday.

The board of trustees voted Tuesday to buy and install an energy-producing wind turbine on the college's Normal campus at an expected cost of about $4.7 million.

"Our goal is to become a leader in the emerging green economy rather than a follower," said college President Allen Goben. "So this addition of a turbine on campus will really help us as we look at our own curriculum and program development as well as provide efficient energy for the campus."

The turbine itself is expected to cost about $2.5 million, but officials have not yet decided on a supplier.

The college was awarded $950,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy and an additional $500,000 by the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to help fund the project. The college will borrow money to finance the project and use money saved from utility expenses to repay the loan over 15 years. read more>>>
